These days, buying a digital camera has become a complicated process that requires a little bit of research and understanding before you make a purchase. Although for the most part most digital cameras offer the same functionality, you will still have to choose a digital camera based on your size and quality requirements. Some digital cameras are tiny and convenient, while others are intended for professional quality pictures. There's a new breed of digital camera called a compact camera that is light and portable and can easily fit into your pocket. Although these cameras are not known for taking professional quality pictures, they are still good enough for the casual picture taker. The average resolution on the camera like this is between five and six megapixels although some of the more expensive brands can offer up to six or seven megapixel resolution. There are also several larger cameras that are capable of taking pictures up to and above 10 megapixels, which means that these produce not only high-quality images, but you can also blow them up to larger sizes without losing any quality in the process. Most of these cameras are not nearly as portable as compact versions, but they can also be upgraded with professional lenses and other equipment. If you haven’t heard of DSLR cameras, then you should expect to hear something very soon because the prices on these are dropping very fast, which means that average photography buffs will soon be able to afford professional quality cameras. DSLR cameras use a mirror that allows you to see the image you are about to shoot and therefore offer a much more accurate picture than those taken by point and shoot cameras. DSLR cameras also feature much larger image sensors, which means that the quality of the picture is almost guaranteed to be better when compared to higher MP point and shoot cameras. Lastly, DSLR cameras can be upgraded with professional lenses, meaning that you can easily turn an ordinary DSLR camera into something more professional, which can’t be said for most point and shoot cameras. When shopping for digital cameras are a few other features that you need keep in mind such as zoom (optical/digital), viewfinder screen size, and the ability to capture movies and video. Most smaller cameras come with a viewfinder that is about 2 1/2 inches, but you can also find them much larger if that is important feature for you. Most digital cameras allow you to zoom up to 3-4x, although you can find some with capabilities up to 10x if you're willing to spend the money. With regards to movies and video, even the standard compact cameras usually offer this feature, however you need to be cautious of storage space because video requires more room than picture taking does. Most digital cameras will allow you to expand their memory with an SD memory card slot, so make sure that any camera you buy has that capability. The standard battery type for a digital camera is rechargeable AA's, but some do allow you to recharge a built-in battery via a USB port. Keep in mind that if you're looking for a camera that you can keep with you on the go, then being able to replace and charge batteries at your leisure is much more convenient than needing a computer to recharge them. If you're looking for a basic digital camera than you can probably find one between $100 and $150. There's no need to spend $500 for camera if you just need something to take with you on vacation or to other family activities. However, if you are interested in becoming a professional photographer or need the capability of creating large-scale reproductions, then you need to look for something a bit more expensive. Either way, thanks to improvements in technology, digital cameras are affordable for anyone that needs them. |
